While I’m normally not one to gush over a hatchback car (the STi fell out of favor with me when it came out in hatchback form), I must admit that the new Volkswagen Scirocco GT24 is ridiculously good looking. Two vents sticking cut in hood (complete with hood pins), BULGING fender flares to cover both front and back tires (with noticeable negative camber), a huge GT-wing on the back, huge diffuser on the front and back, and headlights that look like angry eyes; the press photos for the new Scirocco GT24 version are impressive.
Underneath it all lies a 2.0 liter turbocharged motor that is from the GTi but outputting approximately 325 horsepower in the Scirocco. Power is put to the ground through Volkswagen’s new fangled DSG gearbox which will be sporting shorter gears and some heavy duty components, to accomdate all the RACING that this car is intended to do… which leads us to the interior (or lack of it). Does not look like any extra weight was spared for user comfort in the Scirocco GT24; there is merely a sea of metal and carbon fiber with a touch of felt material covering the seats and steeirng wheel. The race-inspired digital dash and the buttons located where the center console would be mean business.
Of course, the US will not receive this version of the Scirocco. Volkswagen’s official stance on bringing it to America is a no because they claim it would cannibalize sales from the GTi and R32. This explaination does not seem entirely truthful as consumers shopping between a GTi and R32 would be unlikely to consider a fully built racecar with a stripped interior. A more plausible reason (I’m guessing) is due to the demographics of the US (large SUV loving) are scaring Volkswagen away from releasing this race ready Scirocco. Perhaps the same reason that the US usually misses out on all the cool cars? Frankly it is surprising that they decided to release the Nissan GT-R here.
