Howdy Webriders! Dr. VW here. This weekend is going to be a slew of blog posts, because so many things are happening! Now for those of you who follow the offroad scene, you all know about SCORE. The big events are held on the baja penninsula of Mexico, but there are smaller events stateside. One of these is the Las Vegas to Reno Race. Hit the Jump to check out the sweet rides!
Chet Huffman Motorsports’ Trophy Truck

In an off-road race that travels through canyons, sagebrush, boulder-lined paths and dry lake beds – from the 2,500-foot elevation desert floor to 9,000-foot mountains, you have to have a vehicle that talks the talk and walks the walk. This ain’t your standard 4WD truck. Chet Huffman and his co-driver Jerry Whelchel drive one of the raddest examples of a well engineered Class 1 Trophy Truck. 125″ wheelbase, 800HP Patton Racing Engine with a Chevy 443 small block, and with a minimum of 28″ of wheel travel, this truck is made not to trail blaze, but utterly dominate nature.
Nature however, is the least of the drivers worries. With portions of the race taken in very low gears at speeds reaching a staggering 15mph, engine wear and heat becomes a serious factor. When the pace finally picks up across open salt flats, these trucks can reach speeds of up to 130mph, and at those speeds anything goes. The good news is that the driver doesn’t have to pay attention to everything, letting his co-pilot manage the GPS navigation and looking for obstacles in the road. In any case, if you’re in the area, you should check out this race and save yourself the process of applying for a passport to reach Ensenada.
Enjoy the Photos! Dr. VW-out.
