Big_Blocker here coming to you on a very beautiful Super Bowl Sunday with a story that transpired yesterday. I was so close to being the proud owner of a complete 1977 Pontiac Trans Am I could taste it. Read what happened after this…
My friend Jamal got the Trans Am our junior year in high school from a guy out in Texas. Jamal’s dad owned a ‘77 in his youth so he deemed it prudent for Jamal to be granted that same luxury. Being one of his friends and a car lover I was naturally excited to ride in it. Upon arrival all of our friends flocked to Jamal’s house to gawk at the newest addition to our hometown cruising crew. Jamal drove the car throughout high school until he crashed it our senior year going a little too fast on a freeway on ramp. The car spent the next few months of its life being put back together with a new fender and some frame straightening. The guy they took it to for the mechanical work did a shoddy job on the engine rebuild and the car never really ran the same. The car was then parked for a while and Jamal used other family cars for transportation. It made another brief appearance when Jamal was allowed to drive it for a little while until overheating on the freeway and being parked forever. The car sat in their driveway for over a year and each time I came over to his house, his parents would ask me if I wanted the car. Of course I did, however with nowhere to put it locally and a mother totally against such an aqquisition, this did not happen.
This brings me to yesterday when I got a call from Jamal saying that because they were re-modeling their house, I could virtually have the Trans Am as long as I got it out of their driveway. With this offer, how could I refuse? So, after calling up my dad and getting him on my team, I called up my uncle who has a few acres of land down near San Diego and set up a place to store it until this summer when I could get it running again. It was starting to feel like I was going to actually get the car I had been wanting for so long. Alas, this did not come to fruition as a man offered Jamal’s dad $1,500 cash and took the car last night. CURSES! Although a little disappointed I am not mad at Jamal’s dad in the slightest because immediate cash in hand is better than nothing at all. This also gives me the excuse to go looking for a project of some sort this summer if time permits. Perhaps a 1968 Dodge Charger? Who knows what the future will bring but seeing a this experience re-ignited my love of the Trans Am, check out Muscle Car of the Week for a new installment featuring the late 70’s bird. Big_Blocker out.
