A couple months back, we had a blog post about a hot little mid engine roadster concept from Volkswagen that was then called the Bluesport. The platform was designed to drive like a small sports car like the Toyota MR2 while being easy at the fuel pump like a Toyota Prius; this balance of thrills and economics was achieved primarily due to the 2.0 liter turbo diesel engine that had an estimated output of 180 horsepower and 260 ft-lb of torque. We always knew that it would be the base for a smaller version of the Audi R8 and a Porsche model that slots in right underneath the Boxster (in size anyways). AutoZeitung, a German tuning magazine, has whipped up a concept drawing of how the new Porsche Speedster should look like.
For its overall shape, it borrows heavily from the current model Porsche Boxster, but it stays true to the Bluesport chassis and looks a bit sportier as a result. However, I noticed a lot of elements from the Porsche 911 for the front bumper cover. The side profile also looks like it came straight off the Boxster, the sweeping curve that ends in a rear brake vent is identical.
Likely transmission choices include choice between a six speed manual gearbox and Porsche’s newest dual clutch automatic transmission. Higher tier features like the PASM adjustable suspension and carbon ceramic brakes probably would not make it on to the Speedster as that seems to defeat the point of this car, which is to be an affordable and economical Porsche (doesn’t sound right).
Why not just base the new Boxster on this platform? Insert a bigger flat six motor and call it a day. For some people, it might be an issue that their new Porsche shares almost all parts with a Volkswagen, but I believe that most Porsche enthusiasts don’t consider the Boxster a real Porsche to begin with! People love the Cayman don’t they?
It’s been mentioned that the Bluesport platform will not make it to profitability unless it was released across three brands and it would be a shame to see this project canceled because Porsche couldn’t make it work.
