It seems that Volkswagen pulled a twofer at their Press Conference in Geneva. In an earlier report, we hypothesized that the VW group would expand their use of the TDI platform in the US, and one of the areas we thought they would capitalize on the TDI’s success would be in the Rabbit.

But in a surprise move by Volkswagen, it appears that the smaller, cheaper entry level Polo hatchback (which has had the TDI in Europe for years) will be coming to the US instead! This is a great news for loyal VW fans, who have been clamoring for years to bring the wildly popular Polo stateside. What this means is not only is the US getting an entry level sub-compact hatch from VW, but it is getting it with a TDI engine- allowing the Rabbit/Golf and the GTI to retain their sportier personas without VW losing buyers who might want a cheaper and more economical car. The new Polo is smaller and cheaper than the Rabbit, but it has both TSI and TDI engines that are more than adequate to scoot the little sub-compact around. Even more exciting is the announcement from VW that the Polo Blue Motion may come into production as early as 2010. The Blue motion is an even more efficient version of the Polo, utilizing aerodynamic changes and lower rolling resistant tires.

The result? the Blue Motion Polo Concept, possibly available in the US by 2010, will (supposedly) get an estimated 62 MPG and only allow 100g of CO2 per Kilometer, making it the lowest polluting 5 seat diesel car in the world. With MPG numbers that rival the Prius and beat the pants off many hybrids and an estimated price BELOW 13k with seating for 5, the Polo might just become the new Beetle. (The current “new” Beetle notwithstanding)
