Mercedes Benz has finally finished the unveiling the 2010 E63 AMG with a series of pictures that show off the car on the racetrack and some winding roads. Besides the monstrous power and imposing presence that AMG cars have, MB is particularly proud of their new AMG Ride Control Sports Suspension which will feature electronically controlled dampers. Somehow, they have also managed to give fuel economy a boost, the motor is now 12% more efficient than its previous applications. Since it’s a Mercedes Benz, of course there will be an array of driving aids designed to maximize your safety and minimize human involvement. Read on to find out more about this refined powerhouse.
Like the SL63, CL63, S63, C63, and ML63, the new E class AMG will be rocking the 6.3 liter V8 engine which develops 518 horsepower and 465 ft-lb of torque in this chassis. The engine is tuned for a bit more high end horsepower in other AMG cars but it trades off the superior fuel efficiency that the E class will have.
An AMG tuned SPEEDSHIFT 7 speed automatic transmission transfers power to the rear wheels; this gearbox is a bit different from other MB transmissions because it uses a multiple disc wet clutch (like a clutch you’d find on a Yamaha R6). Drivers will have a choice of four modes of shifting: “C” for Controlled Efficiency, “S” for Sport, “S+” for Sport+ and “M” for Manual. Wouldn’t it be a lot better to just include a knob that will set the shift point/speed of the automatic shifting mode?
Launch control, which they have called “RACE START Function” will also be programmed into the transmission. 0-60MPH times have been quoted as low as 4.3 seconds using this system. The press release from Benz failed to disclose warranty information related to launching, the type of problem that has plagued the Nissan GT-R since its release.
The AMG Ride Control system is essentially an electronically regulated dampening system that keeps the front end maneuverable while keeping the vehicle composed and comfortable. To add to this effect, the steering rack is an electronically controlled variable ratio design that is making its way into more cars now days; the press release boasts of a 22% improvement in steering speed.
Finally, the new additions that increase safety while taking some of the driving load off the human include ATTENTION ASSIST , PRE-SAFE, NECK-PRO, and Brake Assist PLUS. Attention Assist is able to detect drowsiness in drivers, Pre Safe is able to apply the brakes when it detects that an accident is about to occur, and Neck Pro responds during a collision to protect the head and neck.
The E63 is starting to look like it will give the BMW M5 a run for its money; too bad no Nurburgring times have been posted… it looks like it will be a fun ‘Ring Taxi at least.
