Let’s be frank — no one’s crying in their Cheerios about the death of the Pontiac G6, G5, G3 or Vibe. Design junkies are upset over the demise of the gorgeous Solstice and the even more gorgeous and perhaps still upcoming Solstice Coupe. Whereas the power mad among us are bummed about the G8, the rebadged Holden Commodore that was in fact the best American car I drove last year. Because really, cars this good deserve to live. And it looks as thought hte LAPD feels the same way I do. Jump it.
The Panther platform Ford Crown Victoria is older than many of you reading this sentence. First introduced in 1978 and endlessley refined over the years, the Panther’s more than thirty years of duty is coming to an end in 2011. And while taxi cabs can switch to minivans (or whatever), cops need big, potent, rear-wheel drive sedans. Sedans like the G8. And why not? They’re already federalized, fast as heel and chock full of great handling. Plus, Holden already dressed one up as an LAPD black and white and stuck it in front of their Australian headquarters.
The deal is reportedly for as many as 40,000 Commodores to come over — badged as Chevys — at some undetermined point in the future. That large number isn’t just for Chief Bratton’s force. Nine other police jurisdictions are interested in the potent Holden. And that’s just in the US. Canada, Britain and certain Middle Eastern countries have all express interest. I for one cannot wait until these start showing up cheap at auction. [Source: Motory Authority]
