Volkswagen Scirocco R

We can add the standard new Scirocco to the long list of desirable German cars we can’t have — RS4 Avant, anyone? To be fair, I’m not all that head over heels in love with the current GTI as most folks seem to be (cough, Car of the Year?!?, cough). Seeing as how the Scirocco is mostly just a rebodied GTI, well, I haven’t been losing sleep. However, there’s a new Scirocco in town — the R — and this guy looks to be jealousy inducing. Why so? Jump.

Mostly due to the engine, a 2.0-liter TFSI. The “T” stands for “Turbo” and we like turbos. The FSI is a bit more… well, it stands for “Fuel Stratified Injection.” That’s fancy German-speak for direct injection. And we really love that. How come? The RS4 and R8 both feature FSI motors. And they rule. The Scirocco R doesn’t look to be too far behind, with 265 hp and 256 lb-ft of torque — again, only 2.0-liters. In fact, the 2.0-liter TFSI is the same engine found in the Audi S3, another killer car we don’t get. All that power is being routed through the front-wheels, however VW is releasing their new XDS electronic differential to deal with it. Basically, when inside wheel slippage is detected, the XDS acts as a differential lock and restores traction. Neat! And we can’t have it…

But don’t fret too much — from the looks of things, VW is prepping a GTI R (or R GTI) and since the R32 is no more (and always sold well), the odds are good that us poor, deprived Americans might get our hands on it, the 2.0-liter TFSI and the XDS. In any case, the Scirocco R is debuting at the Nurburgring 24 Hour this weekend. I’m interested to see how it does. At least we know it will look hella good. [Source: Motor Report]
