Here’s an odd “never-thought-that-would-happen” moment — the San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that Daimler’s recent investment in Tesla has re-valued the electric car company at $550 million — approximately half of what GM is reportedly worth these days ($1.17 Billion). Call me crazy, but it seems almost impossible that a company which has so far has only produced one car (a tiny, 2-seater roadster that costs $110,000), been on the brink of bankruptcy more than once, and has only been in existence since Hanna Montana got popular is suddenly worth as much as The General? Jump.
Aside from the fact that Tesla is really the only electric car company to actually deliver a car, it still boggles the mind that they’re worth so much. With today’s news that GM may be within 5 days of declaring bankruptcy, and the possibility that the Federal Government is going to take a 70% stake in the company, Tesla may end up being a domestic game changer, especially if the sedan they’re producing is released alongside the Volt. I’m going to get my popcorn. But before I do, I would like to remind everyone that back in the late 90s start ups like pets.com were valued higher than GE. Looks like my popcorn needs a few grains of salt.

It’s easy to be baffled that an organization as big as GM can be worth so little…until you look at their debt and pension obligations.
I think it is, GM is going to shit, tesla makes things people want lol
Yes, but will anyone make a car that people can afford? If someone came out with an electric car that went 100 miles on a charge and cost about 12,000$, sort of a Voltswagen type vehicle in the spirit of the Model T/Model A Fords, Volkswagen (the people’s car) and the new Tato Nano, bare bones but rings in at about 2500$, then huge gas vehicles would become the realm of the rich and used for long distance transportation. What is needed is a battery plugin design with all electric drive train and a small gasoline charger on board for long distance. GM killed their electric car program and this is where it has got them.
