Like the Soup Nazi from Seinfeld it seems that whenever an ultra-awesome car comes out in Europe, you inevitably hear the PR people add at the end, “No [insert awesome car here] for You”! Well maybe not quite like that, but they do tend to always add the disclaimer that there are no plans for release in the US. The Ford Focus RS, the VW Scirocco, and now we add another to the recent list — the Audi A5 Sportback. jump with me for the dirty deets. I know, I’m a tease.
Gallery: Drop dead gorgeous.

Oh how I love the new Audis. The headlights. The curves. The plush interior. The TDI engine. And now Audi is bringing sexy back with my favorite body style — the fastback. Though the Sportback is more subtle than other iconic fastbacks (like say, a Mach 1 Mustang or a VW Type Three) it represents a recent trend of going back to hatches. The BMW 5-series Gran Turismo, the Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback, and the Porsche Panamera all have neo-fastback body styles — and most of them pull it off well.
Aesthetics aside, the A5 Sportback is emphasizing the “sport” in its name. Six different engines will be offered, ranging from 2.0 to 3.2L and putting out between 170 and 211 HP. Half the engines will be TDI turbo diesels and the other half will be FSI direct injected gasoline or TFSI turbo gas rigs. Coupled to these are a trio of transmissions, ranging from 6 speed manuals to the top of the line S tronic 7 speed automatic. Of course, some of the models also come with Audi’s legendary Quattro AWD. Even cooler is the green tech going into the beast. Start/stop technology on the larger gas engines and energy recuperation technology on all models. Sweet.
And you know what? WE DON’T GET IT! It’s unbelievable! This new Sportback is the perfect answer for someone like me — someone who always prefers a coupe but knows that realistically a 4-door is more functional for ferrying everyone around. The fastback body style, coupled with Audi performance would make the 2010 Sportback a hit here in US says I. But the powers that be refuse to bring it over stateside, remembering all too well the BMW 318i and the Mercedes-Benz Sports Coupe. But come on Audi == we can change! [Source: Audi]
