With summer in full swing and many traveling weekends coming up (the 4th of July included) there are a lot of people out there that are going to need to transport a massive amount of people and equipment across large distances. Be it to lakes, rivers, deserts and Disney World forests. Much of this equipment is either for use on water or some form of mobile housing that needs to make it to a campsite. Now whether or not you are experienced in trailering things or a novice, check out the following tips. Jump.
The first thing one needs to know when towing is the exact weight of the trailer and approximate weight of the cargo in order to ensure the tow vehicle has the appropriate equipment and power necessary to move the trailer safely. If the trailer is not one used for personal watercraft i.e. jet ski or boat, then pay attention to these loading tips. To keep the trailer stable on the road, load the heaviest items in the front of the trailer, or in front of the trailer axle. This will keep the weight of the load on the hitch and not free to sway at speed.
Because the trailer adds not only length but weight to the vehicle, make sure driving habits are adjusted in order to compensate for the extra beef of the vehicle. Driving slower and allowing more time to slow down are big things when towing and it is also a good idea to give vehicles with trailers a little more space on the highway in case they need to pull over suddenly. Sudden jerks of the steering wheel, rapid braking and acceleration are all things to avoid while towing. Lastly, if the trailer sways despite correct loading and driving habits, do NOT continue to tow it. Read some more tips right here. Happy hauling.
