Before I looked at the numbers, I assumed the best selling car would be a Camcord of some variety. Not the case. Surprisingly enough, the top selling vehicle for the month of June was the Ford F-Series line of pickup trucks. Ford moved just under 36,000 units. Just goes to show that no matter how crappy the economy, people still want beefy trucks. And to the tune of 10,000 more than the second place Toyota Camry. Third place? The Chevrolet Silverado of course. Go figure. [Source: Kicking Tires]

Just a quick and somewhat disturbing bit of news. According to a recent article from the Assosiated Press, the Ford Fusion boasted higher sales numbers than the entire eight model lineup of Chrysler. I will say that again: the solitary Ford Fusion sold more units than everything Chrysler had to offer combined. Maybe this isn’t too surprising to some, but I for one am shocked. In a previous post I mentioned Chrysler’s poor numbers despite huge discounts on inventory but this is pretty ridiculous. The only good news for Chrysler was the fact that Dodge Challenger sales actually increased. However historically speaking, basing a business model on muscle cars doesn’t work so well. [Source: AP]

This week’s feature muscle car has a lot in common with the car from last week, the 1970 Coronet R/T. First, it’s a MOPAR. Second, the looks of this car have been called into question by more than one muscle car enthusiast, myself included. Despite that, it is a muscle car just the same. Have a gander at the 1971 Plymouth Road Runner.

Whenever I run across a vehicle like this a thought pops into my head: What in god’s name was the owner thinking when he decided to jack an already large Ford Excursion 22 inches into the sky? I truly cannot say because I’m a rational person. According to the, uh… not so rational seller, this behemoth gets 18 to 20 mpg on the highway (yeah right, maybe going down a 6% grade with a 15 mph tailwind) and about 14 in the city (ha!). Whether or not this is true I cannot… it’s not true. Remember, bone stock Excursions got 8/12 mpg. Yet another question skates through my mind: How do you get in? Hit the jump for the piece de resistance. Read More >>

Is it safe to say that most of us car guys and girls have one brand that we are for the most part loyal to? I mean, I’m a Dodge man, and my best friend is a Ford guy. Naturally, we like to give each other a hard time when it comes to which brand is superior to the other. I put this list together with the help of Musclecarclub.com so that you all can have some ammo when it comes to brand superiority with your friends. And I hope they’re Anglophiles. Jump.

Alright, Ford’s sales weren’t exactly spectacular. However, relative to the other members of the Big Three, they were effing great. Ford announced today that their total June sales were 154,873, down 10.7 percent from the 173,462 units they sold at this time last year. Ford executives claim that surging sales of the Fusion (up 26%) and Flex are responsible for the push towards positive sales. Now to those that weren’t paying attention to the auto industry a few months ago, a 10.7 percent drop in sales doesn’t seem like anything to celebrate. But trust me, it is. Just look at Chrysler’s June sales, down some 42 percent from last year. This number surprised me because of the price slashing going on at the near 800 dealersips that are closing after bankruptcy filings should have stimulated people to venture onto the lots. Alas, it didn’t. Looking on the bright side, at least one American car manufacturer is still chugging along. Way to go, Ford. [Source: AP]

Okay, so maybe secession is too strong a word. Still, buying a new car in California in the coming years may mean less horsepower and more bureaucratic red tape [Ed Note: Though the death of fun cars has been predicted ever other year for the past 3.5 decades, and new cars are more potent than ever]. Today the EPA granted California complete control over emissions standards for new cars and trucks beginning with this model year. Apparently, due to the crazy amount of pollution in California (and I would know as I live 20 min outside Downtown LA) California feels, nay, felt that it needed more stringent pollution control and thus petitioned the EPA. After originally rejecting California’s bid for independent regulation in March of last year, the EPA reconsidered as per a request made by President Obama in January. I am not sure how the state plans to cut down on emissions, be it bigger catalytic converters or more restrictive air filters but one group of new vehicles is going to be hit hard: new diesels. Stay tuned on this issue as I am sure more issues will arise. [Source: EPA]

In an announcement today, GM said that it would no longer continue a joint venture with Toyota at the Nummi Plant (New United Motor Manufacturing Inc.) located in Fremont, California. Under current production orders, the facility produces the Pontiac Vibe as well as the Toyota Corolla and Tacoma. Since GM is killing Pontiac, the partnership is not a viable one for the automaker, especially as the company traverses the fields of bankruptcy and seeks to shed as many burdensome assets as possible. A Toyota spokesman cited Toyota’s disappointment upon hearing the news as Toyota is currently operating in the red for the first time since the company was founded over 70 years ago. This decision marks the end of a near quarter century long partnership between GM and Pontiac. Geo Prizm, we hardly knew yee! Or is that knew thee? [Source: AP]
