So i just got back from the time of my life at Jim Hall Kart Racing School. Last Sunday some friends and I headed up the coast to attend one of the most exhilirating events i’ve ever taken part in. This isn’t your average 2 mile an hour go kart track, this is the real deal, or at least where the future F1 drivers go to work there way up the chain.

After the quick and scenic trip up the coast their track, located just off the 101 in Oxnard, we got out and stretched our legs for what was to become an epic day. When we arrived, we were greeted by the staff who were prepping the karts for the day. They cleaned the engines, changed tires and did a safety check on each kart before we started. Since, i had never been in a kart that went over 20 mph before, i was a little nervous, but after chatting with one of the 12 year olds that had been to the kart multiple times, my nerves were settled, as it became clear that these karts were one of the safest motor sports around. More after the jump!

So then training began. The 12 of us sat down in the training room with a white board and the staff to go over the course, safety, and strategy for getting the best laps at the track. After the orientation we each got a helmet, a jacket and racing gloves to go out for our first lap around the track and boy were we excited. These 100cc Sprint karts were plenty fast. When your ass is 1 inch off the ground, 50 mph feels like 100!

Here are the specs on the karts we went out on:

After our first lap we were geared up and ready for the rest of the 6 hour day. The track was fantastic, each section presented a new problem and a new solution to be found. It was really an awakening of sorts to realize how much thought goes into racing one of these karts and how technical racing can be. There were so many things to keep in mind while we were flying around the track. For instance, where do i turn in? How late can i brake into the turns without carrying to much speed? Where is the apex of the turn? At what point do i want to apply throttle when coming out of the corner? What is the best line through the chicane? Remember to keep your eye on the next corner ahead, etc.

The list goes on and on, and after the day was done, it was clear to me that it could take someone months or even years to perfect this course. It took me a minute to just get comfortable at the speeds at which the karts were going. I kept letting off the gas early, for fear of carrying too much speed into the corners, but after following the instructor and finding the proper line and amount of speed to carry, it was clear to me i just had to commit to it and go full force.

My friends and I each had a blast at Jim Hall, in fact we can’t wait to go back for the next session and now we’re even considering entering in a endurance race some time with friends. I’d recommend a few classes at Jim Hall for any car enthusiast or racing enthusiast. If you want to learn how to properly drive a course/track in the shortest amount of time, i think that Jim Hall is the perfect place to start. There are so many concepts that you learn at the school. A new concept that i wasn’t familiar with entirely was trail braking. I learned to set the weight of the car on the front wheels to carry the maximum amount of speed through a turn. Not only did it scrub seconds off my lap time at Jim Hall, but it also translated to my times on Gran Turismo 5, another favorite pass time of mine.

Anyways, i could go on and on. Thanks Jim Hall, I’ll see you guys again soon!

XM Satellite Radio

Additionally, details such as frameless door windows with automatic indexing glass contribute to the overall feeling of quality, substance and technical prowess.

Design details

With a design that is very faithful to the original concept, the 2010 Camaro is a 21 st century sports car that acknowledges its heritage. A long front dash-to-axle and short rear deck give the Camaro classic proportions, while a sleek windshield profile, wheels pushed to the corners and muscular fender forms are modern elements that reinforce its advanced engineering – and give the car a decidedly aggressive stance.

Elements such as a forward-V shape at the front of the car and “gills” in the rear quarter panels are distinctly Camaro cues, as are the broad rear fender “shoulders.” Those elements make the new Camaro instantly recognizable, but their execution is smoothly integrated into the contemporary exterior form. A family of large, 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels also contributes to the Camaro’s modern appearance.

“The new Camaro is just that – new,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. “We acknowledge the nameplate’s strong heritage in the design, but recognize that keeping this modern sports car relevant meant more than simply honoring a classic car. The line forms, stance and overall execution are consistent with other new Chevrolets.”

A well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail also characterizes the Camaro’s interior. A pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles that feature round gauges in square housings is a nod to classic Camaros, while an available ambient light package offers advanced LED light pipe technology to give the cabin a distinctive and inviting glow. Cloth upholstery is standard; heated leather-appointed seats are available.

Details such as large, chrome-trimmed controls, low-gloss surfaces and premium fabric or acrylic appliqués convey a richness that is unprecedented in previous Camaro models – and challenge its contemporary competitors. More great detail is evidenced in the available center-console gauge cluster, which takes its cue from a similar option on 1969 Camaros. It displays oil temperature, oil pressure, state-of-battery and transmission fluid temperature, all highlighted with modern LED backlighting.

Powertrains

An advanced, efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing is standard on LS and LT models. Direct injection technology helps the engine deliver more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. That means less fuel is consumed and lower emissions generated – including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions.

The Camaro’s 3.6L engine also employs variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy across the rpm range. It is rated at an estimated 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.

The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard, manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, estimated at 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 408 lb.-ft. of torque (553 Nm). The LS3 debuted on the 2008 Corvette and uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06’s LS7 engine to enable great low-end torque and high-rpm power. It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.

A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3 and carries all of its high-performance design features, but also includes GM’s fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy. The V-8 is estimated at 400 horsepower (299 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (535 Nm); and it is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission. This combination delivers an estimated 23 mpg on the highway.

Body structure and chassis

The 2010 Camaro is built on GM’s global rear-wheel-drive architecture, with a strong body structure that enhances safety, quietness and handling. World-class build quality and attention to detail are enabled by features including one-piece body side stampings and very precise tolerances between body panels.

Front and rear independent suspensions are mounted to the rigid chassis, including a multi-link strut arrangement in the front with a direct-acting stabilizer bar and a double ball-joint configuration; and a unique, 4.5-link rear suspension that is double-isolated from the chassis for smoother, quieter driving experience.

Camaro offers two suspensions. LS and LT models receive an FE2 (sport) suspension, while the SS receives the FE3 (performance) suspension, including a lower ride height. Each is tuned to match the performance capabilities of their respective powertrains, as are their wheel-and-tire combinations.

A variable-rate rack-and-pinion power steering system mounts the rack forward of the front axle, for more direct action, an enhanced feeling of driver feedback and better weight balance.

Brakes and chassis control

Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard on all models. LS and LT models receive single-piston calipers all around, with mass-reducing aluminum rear calipers. SS models have larger rotors that are acted upon by four-piston, aluminum Brembo calipers at all four corners. They are designed to stand up to the severe use encountered on road-race tracks, delivering excellent feedback and pedal feel, as well as fade-resistant performance during racing.

GM’s StabilTrak electronic stability control system is standard and incorporates traction control. The system on SS models includes Competitive/Sport mode that is adjustable for performance driving, such as on a racetrack; it also includes a Laun
ch Control feature on SS models with the manual transmission. It enables quicker, more consistent takeoffs during performance driving.

Safety

Designed to protect occupants before, during and after a crash, the Camaro offers a comprehensive system of safety features – starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel are used in key areas throughout the structure.

Safety technologies integrated in the Camaro include:

Driver and front-passenger dual-stage air bags
Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags
Head curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear seat occupants
Front seat safety belt load limiters and pre-tensioners
The front passenger protection system senses children and small-stature adults and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.

Standard OnStar service assists after a crash. With OnStar’s Advanced Crash Response System, the vehicle automatically sends a signal to OnStar for assistance, even if the air bags don’t deploy.

Chevrolet is one of America’s best-known and best-selling automotive brands. With the largest dealer network in the United States, Chevy is the leader in full-size trucks and the leader in sales of vehicles priced $35,000 and above.
Looks like green just got a shade greener. Toyota motor corp has released plans to offer a hybrid electric prius with solar panels, becoming the first major automotive manufacturer to use solar power for a vehicle. Apparently, the plan is to incorporate the solar panels on the roof of the vehicle for their next gen premium Prius, which will power the cars air conditioning system. According to Nikkei, a Japanese newspaper, Toyota plans to use Kyocera solar panels on the vehicle.

There are also rumors stirring about a plug-in hybrid electric from Toyota, perhaps the next gen Prius will be the worlds first hybrid, plug-in, electric, solar powered vehicle. We’re hoping they give it a new nickname so that we don’t need 15 adjectives to describe their next line up. Here’s one, the SPHERE (Solar Powered Hybrid Electric Renewable Energy… uhh… yeah i lost myself on that one.) Anyone up for going back to gas now?

I’d be curious to see the next Prius (solar panels installed) and a regular Camry get on the green scale and find out which one takes more non-green energy to produce. Are these cars really green, or just a way to make consumers feel less guilty about our impact on the environment?

Yet again, Pagani pulls off another masterpiece. And they’re going to do it only 4 more times for this particular limited edition Pagani Zonda Cinque. Apparently, the projects inception was caused by a buyer in Hong Kong with a pallette for high end iron, or in this case a unique blend of titanium and carbon fibre.

All 5 have already been sold for somewhere north of 1 Million each, and unlike most cars, these appreciate over time, unless of course, they crash. And though this ride is street legal, an un-experienced driver is sure to get into trouble. This rocket ship has a 678 hp Mercedes Benz AMG engine and weighs less than 2700 lbs. That’s the equivelant of 1 pony for every 3.9 lbs! That’s like sticking an ICBM on the top of a roller skate.

Our hats are off to Pagani once again for making such a sexy vehicle. Hopefully one day we’ll get to do a little video in one of these. But until then, we can always dream.

Full Press Release after the jump…

(from Pagani Press Release) The great success achieved by the Zonda in the different proposed versions is recognized all over the world. This car has already become an icon and allowed
such a small company to prove its qualities.

The Pagani is not just a supercar manufacturer but rather a place where artistic objects take form following the renowned car tradition of Modena and the Renaissance concepts of art and science combined together by Leonardo Da Vinci over 500 years ago. In Pagani the carbon fiber is the specific know how and a perfect combination of technology and beauty. No compromises are accepted in
the use of innovative materials, always the state of art, to express the passion and skill of who designed and built them.

Back in 1999, launch year of the first Zonda, the Pagani has been focusing its strategies on the research of light weight. The chassis, completely made of composite and other light and innovative materials, contained the weight to 1250 kilos, when all the other cars of the same segment would weight from 30 to 50% more. Despite of the light weight, the Zonda offered excellent comfort and safety standards. By chance, the impact on environment, as for example the fuel consumption, proved to be considerably lower than the traditional supercars and coupes of the same range, with weight from 1.800 kilos to 2.200 kilos.

The Zonda was the first example of a car manufacturer to reach such a high level in the employment of advanced composite materials, which compose the structure of the car and guarantee a stronger resistance than any traditional chassis. In order to understand the difference given by a chassis completely built in carbon fiber, just look at modern F1 cars which use this solution and the F1 cars built in the ‘80s.

The refinement of both internal and external aerodynamics enabled to obtain a low CX and the highest CZ in its sector, improving safety and stability. This accuracy granted the Zonda outstanding performances such as the reduced braking times (100-0 km in 2.2 sec. and 200-0 in 4.4 sec.) and to set the new fastest lap for homologated cars at the Nürburgring, the most difficult and tricky circuit in the world.

Further to these technical qualities, the Zonda also represents a profitable investment. For example the first C12 has increased its value of a 100%. The Zonda F Coupés and Roadsters have reached the 1 ML Euro on the second hand market. Thanks to this the brand value has consequently gone up.

After the great success of the Geneva Car Show ’08 for Zonda F and the Zonda R, a limited series which is already sold out before being produced yet, it seems like the customer cannot accept that the production of the Zonda F has almost come to conclusion. There is never been before such a strong request, it actually seemed like it had been newly launched this year. Besides, recently the crazy news of a number plate, purposely bought for a Zonda F, have echoed around and strengthened the interest in the brand. In fact at a charity auction in the Middle East, a plate number “1” was purchased by a famous car collector Sheik for the price of 14 ML Euros.

Zonda Cinque

A project born to satisfy the request of the Pagani dealer for Hong Kong “SPS”, an incredibile car which will be produced only in 5 (five) limited pieces, already all sold and will be street legal. It will be the first Pagani car to be equipped with sequential gearbox manageable both with paddles behind the steering and with the traditional gear stick on central tunnel. Besides, it will be the first Zonda to
use the new Pagani invention, the carbon-titanium, a special fiber purposely created for the Zonda Cinque, which will be eventually used on the new generation models. This monster has 678 hp, 780 Nm torque, forged monolock titanium wheels, bolts and nuts will fully be done in titanium and boast the Pagani logo.

The interiors are refined and at the same time reveal the sporting attitude of this car. Racing leather seats developed by Toora, 4-points seatbelts and molybdenum steel roll-bars with carbon fiber coating.

The Zonda Cinque total weight will be 20 Kg lighter then the F model, will have new Pirelli tyres, with special compounds for the car.

Suspensions and springs will be in ergal and titanium developed with the latest technology from Öhlins, in accordance with the Pagani specifications. Four different settings, 10 adjustments each, to separate high and low frequencies, both in compression and extention.

The body is equipped with a longer front spoiler, new designed rear wing, central air intake on monocoque, extra air intakes for rear brakes. Flat bottom and new rear air extractors will improve the downforce up to 750 Kg at 300km.

Technical Specifications:

And here it is, the latest security technology from Glasstek; a thief approaches and BAM, the car shoots thousands of shards of glass straight at the would be assailant. Or not…

An artist by the name of Luca Pancrazzi decided it would be a good idea to take a perfectly good Maserati Quattroporte and glue 1,700 lbs of shattered glass to it. The effect is actually quite cool looking, but ultimately pointless. You could have used a buick to achieve the same effect, but no, let’s do it to one of italy’s finest automobiles that costs around $100k. Perhaps there’s more to this story than meets the eye. We’re guessing a Maserati might have run over his first born child while it was in a stroller crossing the street. One could only guess at this after stumbling upon the display in front of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. The name of the piece is “Pedestrian Pulverizer.”

So WebRiders, don’t say we didn’t warn you. Next time you’re in Russia, always look both ways before crossing the street.

More pics after the jump…

One of the biggest changes to the one series will be a focus on more rear passenger space. From these photos you can already see a wider stance and more spacious rear seat room.

We’ve also heard rumors about changes to the tech inside the 1 series. We’re hoping they get a new iDrive system. Never the less, Europeans should expect a plethora of options from the next one series to include: hatchback, coupe, 4 door, awd, and convertible.
