With the all-electric revolution bering slowed by the economy, it’s big news that Aptera has successfully built a pre-production unit of the 2e for rigorous testing purposes before final production. Aptera reported in early January that delivery of its 2e vehicles would be delayed 10 months due to financial restraints and final customer-recommended alterations. The 200 mpg 3-wheeler has a unique design that makes it truly unique in a field of stunningyly styled electric vehicles. Expected cost of the 23 will range between $25,000 and $45,000 and hopefully be homeward bound by Halloween.
It’s been no secret that I have personally taken high interest in the release of the all-electric Aptera Typ-1. This 3-wheeled car (technically a motorcycle) has been featured in previous blog posts: The All Electric Revolution and The All Electric Revolution: Aptera Typ-1 Edition. To summarize:

The Aperta Typ-1 looks to be the first affordable electric vehicle and promises over 100 miles per 4-6 hour charge. The futuristic design sets it apart from any vehicle currently on the market. With only three wheels, the Apter Typ-1 is classified as a motorcycle, which means it doesn’t have to pass any safety tests here in the States. Despite this non-requirement, Aptera has been crashing and recrashing its Typ-1 to ensure passenger safety on this closed-cabin :motorcycle”. The all-electric model will be available in 2009 and the hybrid version will follow in 2010. Aptera estimated that each vehicle will cost you $27,000 and $30,000 for the electric and hybrid models, respectively. A $500 deposit reserves you one of these vehicles when they are released.

Though the Typ-1 was my pick as the most interesting car to be released in 2009, it may very well take until 2010 before the Typ-1 hits the streets. The Typ-1 was supposed to be released early 2009 but has not been pushed back to October 2009. Unfortunately, Aptera has hit some financial snags in the production process and has sent a sincere message to its prospective customers detailing the circumstances [below]. Read the full story here.

“Dear Aptera Family Member,

By now you are likely aware that there are changes happening daily at Aptera. As one of our most loyal supporters and part of the early foundation of our future, we want to update you about some vital issues, including when your vehicle will be available.

Our most recent corporate commitment was that we would deliver the first production Typ-1, now known as the 2e, by the close of 2008. Despite our well-intentioned efforts, we were unable to complete that vehicle before the close of the year, so it’s now slated for January 16. However, unlike prior plans, this vehicle will not be delivered to a retail customer. We will continue our builds but at a much slower rate starting with a small test fleet of the enhanced vehicles, then moving to our volume production launch on October 1, 2009.

For months we have been receiving important feedback from you, our depositor community, and we have come to realize there were flaws in our initial product assumptions — specifically as it pertains to satisfying the needs of real-world consumers. Our greatest degree of learning came just a few months ago when we asked all of you to participate in a brief survey. This critical piece of research requested insights about your expectations for our company and our products, and we discovered a notable disconnect between our product plan and realistic expectations. Some modifications had to be made. For example, you helped us realize that some trade-offs for convenience (like being able to grab a burger in a drive-thru) might be necessary to make the ownership experience more palatable, even if it cost us a couple tenths of a point on our drag coefficient.

To navigate us through this process, we recruited a team of seasoned professionals from the automotive industry and the California tech sector. With a complete management team operating on one accord, we are now in a better position to resolve all of the fundamental product usage questions that have been brought to our attention by our initial depositors.

As we move closer to volume production in the face of this challenged economy, it becomes increasingly important for us to accurately forecast our first year’s production volume. To date, we have tried to provide the greatest flexibility possible by maintaining all deposits as fully refundable, and now it has become equally important for Aptera to properly model our operations to meet demand. To address this issue, we have created a proposition, known as “Lock-in,” to reward your commitment to this point and in the future. Lock-in allows you to voluntarily convert your deposit from refundable to a firm, non-refundable one and receive an addition $250 credit towards the purchase of your Aptera vehicle. In other words, we will give you an additional 50% return on your money for sticking with us and taking the extra step.

The Lock-in program is completely voluntary and no depositor will be penalized for electing not to participate, but only those who opt into the program will be eligible for the additional credit. As always, your deposit money will remain in escrow until you move to transact the purchase of your vehicle, which is when any and all credits will be applied. Aptera is not, and has no intention of using your deposit money to fund the company. We are prudently trying to plan our volume and capacity to assure we do not introduce waste into our system that could lead us down the unenviable path of some of our industry predecessors. And who knows, maybe Wall Street will see us as a role model for offering these types of returns on investments.

To participate in the Lock-in program, email with your full name, reservation number and the simple message, “I would like to Lock-in”. You will receive a confirmation email, and your name and reservation will be added to the credit list. It is that simple.

Our combination of automotive industry experience paired with the pervasive “why-not” attitude of the California entrepreneurial set will continue to make Aptera more effective in every aspect of our business. Our new team is teaching us fresh ways to listen to you and translate your comments and needs into the product, so here’s our pledge: “We will manufacture the most efficient vehicle on the road and continue to apply the input we receive from our consumer.” As we fly in the face of this challenged economy and write a new page in transportation history, we simply can’t afford to cut corners. We are going to do what it takes to get it right, and we cannot get there without your help and continued support. You have stood with us faithfully and we promise that our vehicles will be worth the wait.

We look forward to sharing our dream with you as Aptera introduces the world to the most energy efficient solution for personal mobility.

Thank you for your support,

The Aptera Team

Aptera Motors 2008″

While the Aptera Typ-1 isn’t as sexy as the Lighting GT or as popular as the Tesla Roadster, it is definitely just as interesting. No, it doesn’t accelerate from 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds. No, it’s design isn’t conventional by any standards and looks nothing like any car currently offered. No, it won’t cost $90k to get your hands on one. And no, there isn’t a 4th wheel, so technically it’s a motorcycle. This motorcycle or car, whichever label you prefer, will be offered in 2009 for around $30,000. In 2010, Aptera will make a plug-in hybrid version of the Typ-1 available. Either can be reserved for a $500 fully refundable deposit. More after the jump.

For under $30,000 consumers can own a Toyota Prius, 2010 Honda Insight, and pretty much any hybrid on the market that’s not meant for performance (see Cadillac Escalade and Lexus LS600h). Obviously, what differentiates the Aptera Typ-1 is the independence from gasoline. Cost of ownership over a 4-year period would make up for the price difference and continue paying dividends for the owners.

The attention-grabbing Typ-1 rolls on only three wheels, which means it doesn’t have to pass rigorous safety tests here in the States. Aptera could easily produce a cardboard version of the Typ-1, wrap in in aluminum, and the government would have much jurisdiction over halting sales. Aptera has gone through much trouble to ensure that the cabin of the Typ-1 protects its occupants as well as a standard 4-wheeled sedan. The company website boasts “Person Armored Vehicle. Don’t believe us? Well, when you can carry the weight of two elephants on your roof with barely a dent you are doing something right.” Wasn’t there a lawsuit way back in the day involving Volvo and its ability to withstand an elephant’s weight? The Typ-1’s exterior is comprised of an unspecified alloy that is lighter in weight, yet three times stronger than steel.

While safety might be an issue, efficiency is the staple of the Typ-1. It’s side-view is very reminiscent of a bird’s and it’s overhead view is similar to that of a fish. Both creatures depend on advanced aerodynamics for optimum movement and the Typ-1 incorporates curves to decrease drag to make up for a uninspiring drivetrain. But if i can really get 100mpg equivalent and drive 120 miles without a recharge, it will be a quick sell and buyers will be satisfied.

Some questions remain unanswered. Will the interior of the Typ-1 be condusive to families of 4 or more? How do crash ratings compare to a Scion xA, Chevrolet Aveo, or other small car? Will production be fast enough to sell enough units before other affordable electric cars start stealing marketshare?

More to come when Typ-1’s start rolling off the lots.
